Erik ten Hag has reignited his feud with Cristiano Ronaldo, claiming the Portuguese forward’s elite career effectively ended after his departure from Juventus.
Speaking in an interview on Dutch television, the former Manchester United manager delivered a scathing appraisal of his former player. Ten Hag argued that modern elite football demands a relentless physical and tactical sacrifice that Ronaldo could no longer sustain.
“Every top team must embrace the top player, but the top player must also work for the team,” Ten Hag told ESPN. “And that was simply the problem with Ronaldo.”
“He is of course a great player, one of the greatest in the world,” Ten Hag added. “But that is also the reality: over the last seven or eight years, he simply hasn’t been able to do it anymore. After Juventus, it was over.”

The relationship between the Dutch coach and the five-time Ballon d’Or winner fractured irreparably during the first half of the 2022-23 season. Ten Hag benched the veteran forward for multiple high-profile fixtures, citing a lack of pressing intensity and tactical alignment.
The tension exploded in November 2022 when Ronaldo gave an explosive, unauthorized television interview to Piers Morgan. In the interview, Ronaldo stated he felt betrayed by the club and openly admitted he had “no respect” for Ten Hag. Manchester United terminated his contract shortly afterward, paving the way for his move to Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.
Four years on, Ten Hag doubled down on the structural friction that doomed their working relationship. He suggested that Ronaldo could no longer endure the physical pain required to maintain peak conditioning.
