The warning comes ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. The union emphasized that safeguards against foreign information manipulation must protect core democratic pillars.
The body stated that counter-interference measures must fully respect media freedom and the public’s right to participate in political debate. Authorities across emerging democracies face mounting pressure to police synthetic media and deepfakes before major electoral cycles.
International observers note that emergency powers or broad cybersecurity laws introduced to combat fake news are occasionally weaponized against critics. The European Union stressed that security protocols must not infringe upon civil liberties or sideline political opposition.
